Wearing Thin
by Irwin Flescher
$5.00
|
|

|
Irwin
Flescher, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist with a
sustained interest in the creative process and in
the application of poetry therapy to problems of
everyday living. This original collection of
verse, which centers on the frustrating quest for the
physically redesigned self, was inspired by the author's
earlier poetic contributions to overcome cigarette
addiction. |
Can
reading light verse poetry help you to lose weight?
Psychologist Irwin Flescher thinks so, as long as you read this
delightful collection of light verse poems about dieting as you
run on your treadmill. This slender volume of whimsical
and serious poems about dieting are the perfect gift for those
who are starting a diet.
Sample poem from Wearing Thin
by Irwin Flescher:
God
Help Those!
God
helps those
Who help themselves
Change
from giants
Into elves.
To simply pray
That
God take
Extra pounds away.
Such
urgent pleas
That one may utter
Avoid
the issue:
Bread and butter.
The
truth is that
A person’s fate
Requires
that one
Cooperate.
When
extra pounds
Go on display
The
self can melt
Itself away.
While
“Help Thyself”
Is one good tool,
There
are exceptions
To this rule.
When
chocolate cakes
Parade on shelves,
God
can’t help those
Who help themselves.
Or
conversely,
I suppose,
Can’t
help themselves?
Then God help those!

You Wanted To Help
by Carolyn Foley
Introduction by Barry Lane
$6.95
|
| Miss
Foley was Barry's favorite teacher, and a powerful influence in
his later writing career. This volume is written as a
letter to parents on the subject of communication skills, in
answer to the question "How can we help?". It
provides a clear set of guidelines for parents (and teachers) to
assist their children in becoming effective communicators both
in school and throughout life. |

If I'd Never Had a
Teacher (CD)
written and sung by Barry Lane
$3.00
|
|
I wrote this song for my 4th grade teacher Miss Carolyn Foley (see the Miss Foley awards) It is a persuasive essay that juxtaposes the disturbing attitudes toward teachers in America with the experience of a great
teacher This is the CD version. An Audio Tape version is also available in the store.
Words
to
If I’d never had a teacher
Her
name was Carolyn Foley
and she taught fourth grade.
I was her favorite student,
I thought for three decades.
She read my stories to the room
I sat beside her desk.
I loved the way she sang to us
I even loved her tests.
(chorus)
But teachers they’re just lazy
that’s what the people say.
They babysit till three o’clock
and then they’re home all day.
And think of those vacations,
all that time away.
If I’d never had a teacher,
I’d still turn out okay.
She had a lot of textbooks
but she left them on the shelf.
Miss Foley taught with projects,
we wrote some books ourselves.
I studied the Egyptians,
that Pharoah of the sun.
I still have my cardboard pyramid,
my tomb of Achnaton.
(chorus)
She rarely lost her temper
but when she did we knew
and later we’d apologize
and we’d say sorry too.
She wasn’t always perfect
but she usually was kind
and she had a way of holding up
a mirror to our minds.
(chorus)
Miss Foley never married
she never had offspring
unless you count the six hundred
she cheered on to sing
We rarely come to visit her
they hardly ever write.
but she follows them around each day
and sits with us each night.

Billy
is a scientist
Jane, she reads the news
Sarah is a doctor now
Phil just gave up booze.
We met at the reunion
and talked about the past
Who was your favorite teacher
What was your favorite class.
Remember Mr. Johnston,
we all played ancient Greeks
Miss Hawthorne read a poem by Keats,
the tears rolled down her cheeks.
and what about Miss Foley,
her class was so much fun.
I was her favorite student
we say in unison.
(chorus).
Oh you who pay the taxes
oh you who make the laws
Remember all your teachers
and cherish them because,
You wouldn’t be so self assured
No, you wouldn’t be so smart
if you hadn’t had a Miss Foley
to hold you in your heart.
But teachers they’re just lazy
It’s what you often say
They babysit till three o’clock
and then they’re gone all day
and think of those vacations
all that time away,
If I’d never had a teacher....
If I’d never had a teacher....
If I’d never had a teacher....
Who would I be today?
